Why be in your bag when you can be getting to the bag?
First and foremost, a bag is a fashion accessory necessity. Bags are the protectors and holders of our important personal items: our identification, our money, our keys, and our phone. For my ladies, we hold our makeup, feminine products, glasses, and more. For my gentlemen, it's chapstick, glasses, cologne, and devices. Its important to be mindful that our own individual interests play a part in what type of bag we choose.
If you're in the market looking for a bag, it's important to know what kind of bag you want and how that bag can fulfill what you're needing. In this article, we'll explore the different types of bags and what kind of use you can expect to get from each bag. To start, I’d like to point out that there are many types of bags in this world, and some bags have similar uses as well as mixed uses.
Clutch
Clutches are the ultimate go-to handbag for your casual day as well as evening. Clutches are also considered pocketbooks; these bags are usually medium to large in size. Perfect for going out with the girls to brunch or dinner, most clutches are able to hold your wallet, keys, phone, lipstick, mascara, and feminine products if needed. Some can be made of soft materials like PU, some can be box clutches for evenings out, and some could come with a beautiful lock that adds a secure and chic look to it. You will come across a clutch that is multi-use, allowing you to remove the shoulder strap and have it turn into a true handbag. Depending on your outfit choice, the clutch can complement a variety of looks. This would be a top recommendation of mine to have in your bag collection, ladies.
Tote Bag
Tote bags are perfect for your picnic days, shopping days, work days, and meetup study days. Tote bags are unfastened bags with parallel handles that fit nicely over your shoulder or on your arm. Most tote bags are made from a sturdy cloth, and some are made from leather with a pebbled texture. These types of bags can hold larger items such as books, laptops, a mini speaker, sunscreen, water bottles, drinks, and food as well. I love having at least 2-3 tote bags in my closet with different textures and patterns because not every day or season is the same as before, so being adaptable to these changes (especially being from New York, the seasons are never the same).
Messenger Bag
Messenger bags are a one-strap shoulder bag that many men and women use when carrying important business documents, laptops, and personal items. It can cross over your chest, or you can wear it over your shoulder; it's all your preference of comfort. These bags are perfect work bags or travel bags, especially if you live in the city. They look great with business looks, especially suits.
Backpacks
Backpacks are the ultimate bag that everyone has had; it was probably the first bag you’ve ever owned. From holding school supplies to skateboards, to our lunch and laptop, backpacks will always be the necessary bag to have. You can have a flight that night and pack three outfits in a backpack and be good to go. Backpacks have different textures, different sizes, and different features. Some come with water bottle pockets, some of the smaller ones can be turned into a crossbody bag, and some come with a whistle just in case you’re in trouble. The most diverse and inclusive bag you can have, it's great to have one large backpack and one mini one for different occasions.
Bucket Bag
Bucket bags have a unique look to them. They are elongated bags that have handles or a drawstring on top as a closure, along with a round base. This bag is similar to clutches; you can wear it out to brunch or dinner, and it gives your outfit a different look depending on the other accessories that can complement it as well. I see bucket bags as the perfect bag for garden parties or any other outdoor gatherings.
Duffel Bag
Duffel bags are large bags that are perfect for traveling, sports, and recreational use, and are essentially used by non-commissioned personnel in the military. Usually cylindrical in shape and long in size, they come with two handles and a strap to cross the body. These are similar to bowling bags as well; however, bowling bags also have wheels on one side.
Hobo Bag
Hobo bags are a style of handbag that is typically large in size and has a crescent shape, slouchy posture, and a long strap for over-the-shoulder wear. These bags are made of a soft, flexible material and tend to slouch when set down. These bags can be perfect for casual errand days, park days where you bring a book to read, or days where you go to a friend's or family's house to spend time together. If you have a toddler, you can feel free to hold a bottle, some pull-ups, and snacks in this bag for on-the-go days.
Satchels
Satchels are the perfect bags to carry your books and paperwork in. They have one handle and a strap you can wear diagonally across your body. Satchels tend to be made of cloth material or leather, depending on your preference. If you like a classic, sophisticated yet casual look, then a satchel would be a perfect addition to your bag collection.
Briefcase
For business professionals, your briefcase is the bag that holds your confidential documents, laptop, and all the things you will need for your workday. Briefcases can come in hard-shell, or a mix of hard-shell and suede or cloth material. The closure types are clasp, zipper, flap, button, magnetic, hook and loop, or a drawstring closure. These are also similar to laptop bags; however, laptop bags have a softer material and typically have a zipper closure. This is perfect for men in the business world and is a necessity.
Fanny Pack
Fanny packs are waist bags that are small pouches that can be worn like a belt. Fanny packs are perfect if you don't want to carry anything heavy on your shoulders, arms, or hands. If you go roller skating, this can be perfect for holding your important personal items. Fanny packs are great for concerts, amusement park days, sightseeing days, and traveling in a popular tourist attraction place.
Crossbody bag
Crossbody bags are designed with long straps that can be worn across the shoulder or your body. Similar to the fanny pack, it is perfect for your days of sightseeing, amusement parks, and concerts. They come in different shapes and sizes; however, they are mainly small in size. This bag is perfect for a hands-free, on-the-go type of look.
Baguette
Baguettes are small, compact handbags that are the perfect shoulder bag. More so in the '90s and 2000s look, the baguette has always been on the scene for fashion events and midnight parties. This bag can be made of soft material, or harder material like leather or PU. A baguette is the perfect bag for a day or night out, and there are a variety of designs and looks to choose from.
Shoulder Bag
Shoulder bags are the most popular handbag options, as they come in different designs, materials, hues, and patterns. They have one or two straps that allow the bag to fit under your arm. They have a zipper closure or magnetic closure, and have many compartments inside. Similar to tote bags, shoulder bags are perfect for workdays, running errands, going to class, and even a picnic day. Shoulder bags are definitely a good type of bag to have in your closet if you're looking for a more secure bag that can hold a lot of items for your day.
With the many bag options to choose from, it's important to acknowledge that we all have different tastes, styles, and fashion preferences. That’s why it's important to know what you’re looking for in a bag and understand the uses and purpose of each bag.
